Time to bulk up?

Here are some ideas about how you can sell more stuff by packing it in new and improved ways:

If you ever go to McDonald’s, you’ll know they ask: “Would you like fries with that?” or “Would you like to go large?” It’s a classic example of up-selling. They are getting you to spend more money with them than you originally intended to.

> Can you use that idea in your own marketing?

If you buy a Mars Bar, you have the choice of a standard size, a giant size or a pack of fun size. Each option appeals to a different target market.

> Can you create your own product or service in smaller and/or larger sizes to sell more?

A few years ago, ice cream was just a treat for children. Now, there are brands that target adults, such as Haagen Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s.

> Can you adapt your offering to reach a new audience?

If you buy a packet of tissues, they will often be bundled into irresistible two-for-one deals.

> Can you incentivise people to buy more at the same time, and so increase your average order value?

Services can be ‘bulked up’ to include something extra for an additional charge. For example, I provide a social media package that includes newsletter and blog content together with daily Twitter and Facebook updates.
